Code
Have been continuously opening up my code, trying to test it, check it and see how I can improve it. But there is nothing that I notice that needs improving. I am for once, satisfied. This is the last time I will post about the code. :D

InsomniaX
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22211/insomniax Useful App for disabling sleep when the Mac’s lid is closed- going to be used for when we use our video glasses. The Mac will sit, closed, beneath the chair and rotate with it.

Done and done.
The code is done. Complete. Don’t need to touch it at all. It is commented and tidied. I am so amazed that this is not me finishing the code last minute at 2am on Wednesday morning. It is only Saturday afternoon, I really told myself this code was going to be harder than it was! Maybe Max MSP isn’t as bad as I first thought… Maybe. The final touch was just a matter of getting...

THINK I'M ALMOST THERE.
After a long confused day I think I finally have make some progress. I realised that I had to turn the line by adding more degrees. The camera was following the line so that the coordinate the line was moving to was always in the middle. If i moved the line to the left edge of the screen it was telling me that it was moving -0.698 radians… and the other way it was moving +0.698 radians. So...

Progress
Have just sorted out how to get the camera to follow line as it goes in its circle… Now just need to figure out how to change this line with the x,y coordinates I’m getting from the webcam color track. So far I’ve figured that I need to change the x and z axis by figuring out how far to the left and right the x goes and convert this to radians and add this on top of the...

To Do-
Now that I have got the camera rotating inside the cylinder (the easy part!) I need to get the line drawing inside the cylinder! The trick here is going to be getting the line coordinates to move with the camera. I have figured out how to place the coordinates in a circle just inside the perimeter of the cylinder. The radius of the cylinder and the Radial Coordinate going into the poltocar...

Reading Serial
I have been going the wrong way about this Arduino to Max thing- I have been thinking that I should be getting Max to be reading the pins from Arduino using libraries and such. But really I should just be using the serial port, and reading this from max with the serial object. I have done a quick test, so far I have the number coming in but it only comes in as separate digits so i will have to do...

Polar and Cartesian Coordinates...
Currently trying to make sense of the poltocar, and cartopol objects within maxmsp which convert polar and cartesian points. Trying to figure out how to create polar coordinates using just the degrees that I am getting from the compass module. From what I can understand so far- the first coordinate is the distance from the center of the cylinder, and the second is the degrees, which must be...

Theresa Kendrick: Proposal for the Edge... →

Arduino Compass- HM6352
http://wiring.org.co/learning/libraries/hmc6352sparkfun.html Been playing around with the compass module for our Happiness Machine Brief- Currently have it up and running spitting out the degrees to the serial port. So happy. Looking now to send this data to max and change them using cartopol/poltocar…

Done-ish
So, the code is written. It isn’t at the standard that I would choose for it to be presented on the edge interactive screen. However, it is a primitive representation of what we would like to achieve. The issue is in the way we chose to write the code. Max MSP doesn’t have the best quality when using the jit.qt.movie object, which we chose to use as we could use the jit.chromakey with...

Brainssssstooooormin'
So, our concept and content of our installation hadn’t been completely defined, while we knew the technique we wanted to use, we hadn’t clarified all the rest. So out came the pen and paper and brainstorm we did. Theresa spoke to me about the criticism that others had come across in their work earlier this morning so we took those critiques and tried to develop our work with them. ...

Simplicity
I often find that the best technological solutions are the most simple ones. I found that the fact that our original idea was going to be technologically difficult to achieve was hindering our conceptual ideas. Because more effort and concentration was going to be spent problem solving our technological side, less was going to put on the conceptual side. However, with a more simple solution in...

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
http://www.lozano-hemmer.com/less_than_three.php This is an installation that shows the way in which messages pass across a network. While it is not screen based I think a similar installation could be developed to explore the way messages get muddled up as they pass through a network. If I were to do this similarly I would have not kept the message that was sent through the network the same....

WatchWatch
I started looking into people who have used the shadow within interactive installations and how this could be incorporated into our own work. This piece by Efi Kontogeorgou felt like a simple but effective way of exploring hindrance to communication. The viewer is not able to get all the information from the screen all at once so has to move around to explore the content of the screen.

Identity, Communication and Networking
In our last project for emerging practices, our ‘Shadow Network’, we unintentionally found that networking doesn’t always equal clearer and increased communication. Lag throughout our performance showed us the way in which networks often make communication difficult and confused. Our original idea for our interactive screen was for the computer to try and decipher what the user...

Shadow Network
The cultural, economic and social impact of networking and information systems has been strongly documented within the last few decades. Theorist and sociologist Manuel Castells explores in his work the relationship between ‘Net’ and ‘the Self’, and cites the ways in which networking develops individuality, and in turn, creates communication barriers as our individual...

Physical Restrictions
The size of the room limited us from being able to achieve a successful set up, as we wanted to film my shadow, and to then project it behind Theresa. We have now chosen to film the shadow in one room, and project it to another, using the network, and the jit.net objects within Max MSP. This ‘network’ brings in a whole new layer of concepts to explore within the work. We are looking...

Scrapping iPhone.
Our project is based on the idea of a technology that doesn’t distract one from their physical space, but instead helps one access/relate to it better. So the use of an iPhone App- good idea? Mobile devices and other electronics I think distract us from our physical space. Even during Christine’s balloon experiment it was amazing how many people walked past the balloons without...

Interested in the possibility of using a AR browser such as Layar- http://www.layar.com/ Feeling a bit more hopeful about Layar..!! ARtoolkit is really giving me a nightmare. We seem to be hitting a brick wall day after day… Christine has been looking at doing some side experiments for developing ideas about play and the urban space… So hopefully she can give us some good...

New Babylon and the Ludic City
http://members.chello.nl/j.seegers1/situationist/constant.html Found an excellent article about New Babylon (THESE GREAT URBANIST GAMES: NEW BABYLON AND SECOND LIFE, Malaby, 2008)- the idea to create urban space for ‘creative play’ has really struck a chord with me. I like the idea of not so much creating a sense of ownership with urban space, but of creating a sort of bond with it....

Virtual Urban Hack
http://virtualurbanhack.wordpress.com/ Finally got our act into gear for Happiness Machine for studio. Currently we are modeling our work on the Situationist International concept of ‘Détournement’, which I suppose is translated into modern day through culture Jamming by artists such as Banksy. We are currently interested in the ideas surrounding public space- and the ownership of...

Final thoughts
I am pleased with our work. As I left the foyer, with both our projects set up beautifully, I felt a sense of pride. The works, I feel, both had a sense of presence. I feel that in an exhibition type of presentations the works will be strong as they have an intriguing physical and spatial aesthetics. I like to think they have a sense of cohesion about them- maybe thats me being bias- but they both...

Disabilities as Abilities
What this project has really emphasised for me is the way in which often disabilities are also in a sense abilities- enabling people to grasp a new insight and understanding of the world around them. It was my hope to take my own insight as a ‘hard of hearing’ person and express this through our installations “feeling sounds”. While I do find the installation was good for...
